Nobody has ever regretted having one extra box of tile in the garage. Plenty of people have regretted being half a box short on a Saturday with the thinset already curing. The overage question has a real answer, and it depends on three things: the layout pattern, the size of the tile, and how chopped up the room is. Below are the numbers we order by, the math for turning square feet into whole boxes, and the reason a spare box is worth more than the $40 it costs. Those three numbers cover almost every residential job. Two modifiers stack on top of them. Add 5% for natural stone: marble, travertine, slate and limestone arrive with breakage, and you will reject pieces during dry layout because the veining or color is wrong for where it landed. Stone is sorted by hand, not printed by a machine, so you are buying the right to be picky. And add one full box on top of everything for future repairs, which is the single most useful thing in this article and the part everyone skips.
The waste factor is not padding. It is the tile that physically leaves the job as scrap. When a tile gets cut to fill a 3-inch strip at the wall, the other 9 inches goes in the bucket unless there is a corresponding 9-inch gap somewhere else in the room. That reuse is exactly what the percentage is tracking: a straight grid in a rectangle reuses most offcuts, a herringbone reuses almost none.

Rooms under 60 square feet, bathrooms, closets, and anything with a niche or a bench should use the high end of the range.

How to Count Boxes: A Worked Example
Tile is sold by the box, never by the piece and never by the exact square foot. The label prints two numbers that matter: pieces per box and square feet per box. Everything you order rounds up to a whole box, so the real question is not "how many square feet do I need" but "how many boxes clear that number."
Here is the whole sequence on a real bathroom floor.
- Measure the field. A 5 foot by 8 foot bathroom floor is 40 square feet. Do not subtract the toilet footprint or the vanity; you tile under both, and the vanity may move some day.
- Pick the waste factor. 12x24 porcelain in a one-third offset, in a small room with a flange and a threshold, is a 15% job. 40 x 1.15 = 46 square feet.
- Divide by box coverage. The box says 15.5 square feet. 46 ÷ 15.5 = 2.97 boxes.
- Round up. Always up, never to the nearest. 3 boxes, 46.5 square feet, which covers the 46 you calculated with half a square foot to spare. That is thin.
- Add the repair box. 4 boxes, 62 square feet. You will finish the floor with about 20 square feet of matching tile boxed and labeled in the basement.
Notice what happened at step four. Three boxes technically works, but a single cracked tile during install, one bad cut on the flange, or a subfloor patch that eats an extra row and you are short with no way to finish. The margin between "the math clears" and "the job is comfortable" on a small floor is usually one box, which at $2.50 per square foot is about $39. That is the cheapest insurance on the entire project.
On large floors the same rule applies but the arithmetic gets kinder. A 600-square-foot open living area in a straight lay at 10% needs 660 square feet, which at 15.5 per box is 42.6, so 43 boxes. Room by Room
The room shape moves the number as much as the pattern does. Waste is driven by the ratio of cut perimeter to total field, and small rooms have terrible ratios.
- Bathroom floor. 15% minimum regardless of layout. A 40-square-foot floor has roughly 26 linear feet of wall, so nearly every tile touches an edge. The toilet flange alone usually ruins two tiles before someone gets the hole right.
- Shower walls. 15%, and 20% if there is a niche or a bench. A niche means cutting tile to fit around a rectangular hole, then tiling the inside of that hole with pieces that must be cut to exact depth. Curbs and benches are the same problem in three dimensions. Count the shower walls separately from the floor and order separately, because the wall tile is usually a different product.
- Kitchen backsplash. 10% for straight subway, 15% if the tile runs to the ceiling behind the range or the layout is herringbone. Outlets are the hidden cost: every outlet is four notched tiles and a fair chance one of them cracks at the notch. Backsplashes are small enough that a single extra box covers both the waste and the repair stock.
- Large open floors. 10% for straight lay is genuinely enough here, and this is the one case where you can trust it. Long uninterrupted runs let you carry end cuts to the opposite wall. Bump to 12-15% if the field wraps into hallways, around an island, or through doorways that break the grid.
- Stairs. 20%, no debate. Every tread is cut to length, every riser is cut to height, bullnose pieces are ordered by the piece and break easily, and a mis-cut on a tread cannot be hidden. Order stair treads and bullnose as a separate line item and overbuy them specifically.
One more room-level habit: dry lay the first two rows before you mix thinset. Twenty minutes of laying loose tile tells you whether you are about to end the field with a 1-inch sliver at the most visible wall, which is both ugly and the fastest way to burn through overage rebuilding the layout.
Dye Lots, Caliber, and Why the Repair Box Exists
You cannot rematch tile later
Every box of tile carries a shade or dye lot code and a caliber code. Shade is the color of that production run, and it drifts between runs because glazes and clay bodies vary batch to batch. Caliber is the actual fired dimension, which can differ by a millimeter or two from one run to the next; mix calibers and your grout lines wander visibly.
This is why you buy all your tile in one order, check that every box shows the same shade and caliber before you open any of them, and keep a full box sealed afterward. Manufacturers rotate patterns and discontinue lines constantly, so in three years when a dropped cast-iron pan cracks a tile, the store will not have your tile. They will have something close, and close reads as wrong on a floor.
The counter to this is the big-box return policy, and it is worth using deliberately. Home centers generally take back unopened, undamaged boxes of stocked tile within their standard return window with a receipt, which means the correct move is to buy more than you need and return what you did not open. Special-order and clearance tile usually cannot be returned, so on those jobs the overage decision is permanent and you should lean high. Keep the receipt, keep the boxes dry and out of the truck bed, and do the return in one trip after the grout cures, not while the job is still moving.
Label the box you keep. A strip of painter's tape with the room, the date, the shade code and the caliber turns a random box in the basement into something the next owner of the house can actually use.
What Happens If You Run Short Mid-Job
This is the failure the whole article is designed to prevent, so it is worth being blunt about how it actually plays out.
First you check the store. If the tile is a stocked item and the shelf happens to hold boxes from your production run, you are fine, and that is genuine luck. More often the shelf stock is a different shade code. It will look identical in the aisle under fluorescent light and obviously different on your floor next to the tile you set last week.
Then you call for a special order. Reordering from the same run is usually impossible; reordering the same product from the current run typically runs 2-6 weeks, longer for imported porcelain and stone. Meanwhile the room is unusable, the thinset under the finished portion is fully cured, and if it is your only bathroom the schedule pressure makes the bad decision very tempting.
The bad decision is layout compromise: putting the off-shade tile under the vanity, inside the closet, behind the door swing, or along the wall the tub covers. It works, sort of, and every tile setter has done it. It also means the floor has a permanent story attached to it, and it caps what the room is worth in an appraisal or a listing photo. On a full bathroom project, where the total budget is usually five figures, taking that risk to save one $40 box is not a trade anyone would make on purpose.
