Drywall math goes wrong in a predictable way: people count sheets for the walls and forget that mud, tape, and screws scale with surface area too, then make three extra trips to the store mid-job. The Math Behind It
Wall area is the room perimeter times the ceiling height: for a 12x12 room with 8-foot ceilings, that is 48 feet of perimeter times 8, or 384 square feet. Add the ceiling (length times width) if you're hanging it too. Then subtract openings: a standard door removes about 21 square feet and a typical window about 15.
Sheets = (net square feet × 1.10) ÷ sheet area, where a 4x8 sheet covers 32 square feet, a 4x10 covers 40, and a 4x12 covers 48. The 10% waste factor covers offcuts, breakage, and the pieces you ruin cutting outlet holes. Rooms with lots of angles, closets, or stairwells deserve 15%.
4x8 vs 4x10 vs 4x12: Which Sheet Size?
Every joint you hang is a joint you have to tape, mud three times, and sand. That is why pros default to the biggest sheet the room allows: a 12-foot wall done in 4x12s has zero vertical seams. The tradeoff is weight and handling.

Inside a shower, drywall is the wrong answer
Moisture-resistant drywall handles humid rooms, not direct water. Shower and tub surrounds need cement board or a foam board system under the tile. If a bid shows green board inside a shower, that is a re-tile job waiting to happen. Our tile calculator covers the backer board layer too.
Mud, Tape & Screws: What the Numbers Mean
Joint compound: figure one gallon per 100 square feet of hung drywall across all three coats. A 4.5-gallon bucket of all-purpose covers roughly 450 square feet. Setting-type powder (the bags labeled 20, 45, or 90 for working minutes) is stronger for the tape coat and doesn't shrink, but it can't be sanded easily once hard, so most DIYers should tape and fill with setting compound and finish with ready-mixed.
Tape: about 370 feet per 1,000 square feet of board. Paper tape is stronger for flats and the only correct choice for inside corners; mesh only belongs on flat seams with setting-type compound.
Screws: one every 12 inches in the field, every 8 inches at edges, which lands near 32 per 4x8 sheet on 16-inch centers. Use 1-1/4 inch coarse thread for wood studs, fine thread for steel. Set heads just below flush without breaking the paper; a $20 drywall screw setter bit pays for itself in the first hour.

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12x12 room?
A 12x12 room with 8-foot ceilings has about 384 square feet of wall and 144 square feet of ceiling. After subtracting a door and a window and adding 10% waste, that is roughly 540 square feet, which is 17 sheets of 4x8 drywall or 12 sheets of 4x12.
How much joint compound do I need per sheet of drywall?
Plan on about one gallon of ready-mixed joint compound per 100 square feet of drywall, which works out to roughly a third of a gallon per 4x8 sheet. A standard 4.5-gallon bucket handles about 450 square feet through tape coat, fill coat, and finish coat.
How many screws go into a sheet of drywall?
About 32 screws per 4x8 sheet on studs spaced 16 inches on center: one screw every 12 inches in the field and every 8 inches on the edges. A one-pound box of 1-1/4 inch coarse-thread screws holds around 300-320 screws, enough for about 10 sheets.
Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?
Bigger sheets mean fewer joints to tape and a flatter finished wall, so pros hang 4x12 wherever the space allows. For DIY work, 4x8 sheets are far easier to carry, fit in most vehicles, and are the only realistic option for solo hanging. A 4x12 sheet of 1/2 inch drywall weighs about 82 pounds.
What thickness of drywall should I use?
1/2 inch is standard for walls. Ceilings joisted 24 inches on center should get 5/8 inch or 1/2 inch sag-resistant board so they don't pillow between joists. 5/8 inch Type X is required in most garages and between a garage and living space for fire code. Curved walls use two layers of 1/4 inch.
