Flooring Calculator: How Much Flooring Do I Need?

Flooring is sold by the box but consumed by the cut, and the difference between the two is where budgets slip. The calculator below handles multiple areas (add the closet and the hallway; that's where everyone comes up short), applies the right waste factor for your install pattern, and turns the total into boxes and dollars.

The Math & Why Waste Varies by Pattern

Area is length times width per space, summed. Waste is the part people argue about, and the pattern decides it: a straight lay in a clean rectangle wastes about 7% because most end-of-row offcuts start the next row. Diagonal installs cut every border plank at 45 degrees, pushing waste to 12% or more. Herringbone wastes 18-20% because every perimeter piece gets an angled cut and short pieces can't migrate.

The short version of a long debate: LVP won the 2020s for kitchens, basements, and rentals because waterproof plus click-lock plus cheap is hard to argue with. Hardwood still wins resale perception in main living areas, and tile owns wet rooms; our tile calculator handles that math separately since tile is counted per piece, not per box of planks.

What Flooring Costs in 2026

2026 pricing per square foot
MaterialMaterial onlyInstalledNotes
Sheet vinyl$1-$3$3-$6Cheapest waterproof option
Laminate$1.50-$4$4-$8Underlayment adds $0.30-$0.60
LVP$2-$5$4.50-$9Rigid-core costs more, hides subfloor sins
Engineered hardwood$4-$9$8-$15Can be refinished 1-2 times
Solid hardwood$5-$12$10-$18Site-finished adds sanding days
Porcelain tile$2-$8$10-$20Labor dominates; pattern matters
Carpet$2-$6$4-$9Pad quality matters more than face weight

Installed prices assume a sound, level subfloor. Leveling compound, old-floor tearout ($1-$2/sq ft), and furniture moving are the common adders.

Measuring Odd Rooms Without Guessing

Break any non-rectangular space into rectangles and add them; that's what the multiple-area rows in the calculator are for. An L-shaped room is two rectangles. A bay window is a small rectangle you overestimate on purpose. Measure at the widest points, wall to wall, and ignore baseboards since new flooring runs under them (or gets covered by new quarter round).

Buy it all at once, from one dye lot

Planks and tile vary subtly between production runs. Buying your whole quantity in one order from one lot number is the difference between an invisible floor and a checkerboard. This is the real reason to get the waste math right the first time: the matching box you buy three weeks later may not match.

Flooring is typically one of the last trades in a remodel, after drywall and paint. If you're sequencing a bigger project, the kitchen remodel timeline and basement finishing cost guide show where the flooring line item lands in the schedule and the budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?

Add 7-10% for a straight-lay install in a simple rectangular room, 12-15% for diagonal installs or rooms with lots of jogs and closets, and 18-20% for herringbone or chevron patterns. Never buy exact square footage; every row that ends at a wall produces an offcut you may not be able to reuse.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide your square footage including waste by the coverage printed on the box, then round up. Box coverage varies widely by product, from about 17 to 30 square feet, so check your exact SKU rather than assuming 20.

How much does it cost to floor a 1,000 sq ft area in 2026?

Materials alone: about $2,000-$4,500 for decent LVP or laminate, $6,000-$12,000 for hardwood. Installed, expect roughly $4,500-$8,000 for LVP and $10,000-$18,000 for site-finished hardwood, depending on subfloor condition, furniture moving, and old-floor removal.

What direction should flooring planks run?

The convention is parallel to the longest wall or the main light source, and consistent through connected rooms. Structurally, wood flooring nailed to a subfloor should run perpendicular to the joists. When two rules conflict, perpendicular-to-joists wins for solid hardwood; floating floors can run either way.

Do I need underlayment?

Laminate and many floating LVP floors need a foam or cork underlayment unless it's pre-attached to the plank. On concrete, add a vapor barrier. Glue-down and nail-down floors use different prep entirely. Skipping required underlayment voids most wear warranties.
